Ellen wondered what was taking Garrett so long. Usually Skipper found his happy place, did his business, and was ready to get out of the heat.

The others sunbathed by the pool. She and Garrett should be outside in case Victor or Shelia popped up. She decided to go tell him to hurry up and join her outside. When she found Skipper still in the laundry room, she walked to Garrett’s room.

Hearing Nancy’s giggles coming from his room, she stopped by the door and listened. Thinking the worst, she closed her eyes and fought the emotions swirling in her—jealousy, disappointment and anger. For a moment the thought of reporting this to Grayson tempted her. No, she wouldn’t get them written up.

She returned to the patio. She didn’t see Victor or Shelia, but they could walk out anytime. Garret should be out there.

Their guests lay stretched out on chairs, sunbathing.

When she walked near him, Barry sat up. “You aren’t going to get his balls busted over this, are you?”

“Over what?” Ellen said, playing dumb.

After ten minutes, she and the others returned to the kitchen. She made another pot of coffee. Janet dished out plates of cobbler while Karen set the strawberry shortcake out. Sitting at the kitchen island, Barry, Ted, and Dustin ate some of both desserts.

Ellen pulled cups from the cabinet. “What progress has been made finding Alaina Morrow?”

Ted took the cup of coffee Karen offered. “Techs have picked up on conversations about transporting the merchandise. They think they plan to move the girls soon.”

“They gonna drive them across the border?” Dustin asked while eating.

Ellen passed out napkins. “Doubt it. Maybe to another port we don’t have eyes on.”

The conversation ended when Nancy and Garret argued on the stairs. The agents ate silently while listening.

What’s happening?

Nancy stormed into the living room with Garrett following. She snatched her purse. “I’m leaving.”

Ted tapped his fork on the plate to get Nancy’s attention. “You rode with me. I’m not going anywhere until I finish eating. Now chill.”

Garrett grabbed her arm. “Nancy, you’ve got this all wrong.”

“There’s something going on between you and Bennett. I’m not obtuse.”

“There’s nothing between us. You know how Bennett and I feel about one another.”

“No, I’m not so sure I do. I thought you despised her, but that’s not what I’ve witnessed today.”

“I have to be nice. Grayson ordered it. I swear as soon as we’re off the assignment, Ellen and I’ll start our pranks again. Come on, Nancy. Don’t do this.”

“Explain what happened?”

“I can’t.”

Ellen drew a deep breath. What went wrong?

Nancy’s face tightened. “We haven’t been together in weeks. You’ve never had a problem before. Not until you moved in with Bennett.”

“Maybe it’s a medical problem. I swear nothing has changed. I still despise her.” Garrett turned toward the kitchen. His gaze froze on Ellen.

Her stomach dropped. All the camaraderie between them had been an act.

Garrett sighed. “Ellen, I didn’t mean that.”’

She couldn’t answer. Whatever problem he’d had performing for Nancy obviously wasn’t due to any affection he had for her.
